Despite Blaine’s expectations, Morton Kameron had not made an appearance the next morning. Or the morning after that or any part of the following week. Each day that passed without the unwanted guest or another raid had the village breathing a bit easier. Blaine still worked with Callum and MacDonald to set up the trap that he and Kirstine had agreed upon. The entire town was in on it, going into the shed multiple times throughout the week to give whoever was watching the appearance of taking supplies from there.

What they really did was tell MacDonald, who hardly ever left the shed, the supplies they would need. He, in turn, would pass the information on to Blaine and Callum. They would then take an hour each evening to deliver the supplies to each of the families, keeping the location of where everything was kept a secret.

The trap brought a certain kind of camaraderie to the village. They all felt like they were in on something together, that they were all working as a town against the raiders. Even the elderly seemed thrilled to be in on the trap. It brought back some life to the town, for now, they had something to work toward, something to put their hope in.

When Blaine was not delivering supplies or guarding the barn, he was working on fortifying the village. In an effort to lessen the fire hazard of the thatched roofs, he worked with the villagers to coat the straw in mud. At the very least, he hoped that would slow the spread of fire and diminish the damage done. Blaine threw himself into the work, wanting to ensure that this village would survive the winter and outlast these raids. The entire village seemed apt to follow his instructions, growing more and more accustomed to his presence here as the days went on.

Likewise, Kirstine also seemed to have adjusted to Blaine’s presence. She spent most of her days at her cottage taking care of her mother. Occasionally, she would leave the house long enough for a walk through the town to take in all the progress they had made. When she expressed concern over her own home, Blaine took it upon himself to cover her roof in mud just like all the others.

She had surprised him that night by offering to get some ale with him at the tavern that night. The more time he spent with her, the fonder he grew. He was quickly becoming attached to the village almost as much as he was already attached to Kirstine. It was a problem he was sure to face eventually, but for now, he enjoyed her company.

They sat together in the tavern for the fourth night that week, making idle conversation, and nursing their drinks. He sat back in his chair, soaking in the room more content than he ever thought possible. For the first time, he was enjoying the tavern company, not resenting them for it. The people had grown familiar with
